Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid history in a key European match against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight place.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and gave him playing time in pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to perform what he usually does.
"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
Under international regulations, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Lamine opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the team pursue future success.
After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Manchester.
