What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
At least 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.
The victims are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments before the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
