The Mayor-Elect affirms he will make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core policy, was not quick to announce his residency plans right away after his victory in November.
"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the need to focusing my full attention on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," Mamdani said in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
A Contentious Issue
During his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
Yet his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he hails from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.
The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
