The Gory Animated Film Ending That Haunts Fans
Out of all the adult-oriented animated films I’ve personally watched, nothing has remained with me as much as the fear-filled ending of a graphically gory and deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based writer-director created a grim, bleak and frequently brutal world that included a few small , forlorn hints of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars feels like it originated from an impulse to advance animation further, the filmmaker clarified that it was more a try to communicate a global, multicultural theme regarding “the shared root of all wars.”
That idea is communicated by means of a group of vividly colored bears , obviously modeled after a famous series of cuddly characters.
Maturing in a culture built around warmongering and the war machine, a lot of these animals are fixated on exterminating the mythical beasts, because of a holy book that claims the bears they were once rulers of the woods, before the unicorns expelled them.
Others haven’t fully accepted the propaganda, and choose to experiment with narcotics or engage sexually in the forest.
In contrast to their friendly equivalents, these bright beings show genitals and clear urges.
For one notably brutal, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the battle with unicorns becomes a route to power — and especially to authority above his softer, kinder brother the character Tubby.
The character behaves aggressively and a seeming psychopath , and as fear dominates his squad and kills his teammates one by one, he seizes increasingly power for himself, in increasingly violent, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are experiencing their own horror, as a spreading, harmful creature in their woods.
“In the early stages, it seems like a humorous movie,” the filmmaker said. “But then it becomes a more intense and sorrowful film. And in the finale, it’s a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like among the quirky movies from an iconic animator, which find a mischievous joy in permitting cartoon characters swear, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Subsequently it evolves into closer to a more grim movie from the same artist, including ever more explicit brutality , a noticeable connection to the actual suffering of battle.
In the finale, it’s an outright theatrical horror bloodbath.
The horror that makes this a Halloween-friendly watch starts a lot earlier than one might expect.
The Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore lovers of violence, for lovers of intense movies who wish to see a movie they have not seen on-screen before, and who can handle a plot that pulls unflinching brutality.
See it in a dimly lit space without any distractions, and the conclusion will dig deep within you and stay with you.
