The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

His passing follows less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her American tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world says farewell to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
