The English Team to Start UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will embark on their 2028 European Championship journey at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they achieve the expected qualification for a tournament staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an England men’s match since eight years ago, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to stage the England side for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The team are set to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, if they top their group, their round of 16 match would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Tournament Opening and Protest
The championship was launched at an event in central London on the previous evening. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were confronted as they arrived the location by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel to be expelled from the sport because of the situation in Gaza.
Signs were raised with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Schedule
The inaugural fixture of the tournament will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will feature the Welsh team if they qualify.
The national stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the title decider, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at late afternoon.
It is anticipated that an afternoon start, which will also be used for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will attract households and help connect with a broader range of audiences.
Host Nations
The Republic of Ireland are set to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would do the same at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through the standard process.
Locations and Elimination Phase
Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground finalize the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight played at every host’s main arena.
The qualifying draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.
Leadership Comment
“It will be a tournament for the fans and a celebration of everything we cherish about the game – its emotion and power to unite individuals.”
Over 3 million passes, a all-time high for a UEFA European Championship, are expected to be made available to attendees.
