New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities issued security footage Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in March.
