Heavy Downpours Exacerbate Situation for Evacuated Palestinians in Gaza, Officials Warn
Heavy storms over the past week have worsened the precarious living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced residents in the region, as reported by humanitarian organizations.
"Awful" Conditions Poses Serious Threats
A official described the recent storm as "awful", with rain so intense that around 15cm (6in) of water accumulated on the terrain.
"The recent weather was exceptionally difficult for the residents. The heavy rains were so intense... And the gales were so forceful," stated the official.
Officials express significant worry that children sheltering in makeshift shelters in wet clothing will contract hypothermia and other sicknesses.
Deaths and Significant Destruction
The health ministry have reported that one baby has died from exposure and no fewer than 11 other people have lost their lives in roof cave-ins due to the harsh conditions.
Further statements suggest a higher fatality count. Spokespeople stated that multiple homes had collapsed completely and many others had sustained partial collapse.
- Almost 55,000 families affected by flooding.
- More than 40 designated safe spaces severely flooded.
- Countless residents forced to relocate again.
Assistance Efforts Deemed Insufficient
Organizations have stepped up shipments of tarpaulins, blankets and clothes after the truce began, but they have said there is still not enough aid entering.
"Officials are striving constantly to bring in that assistance and to hand it out, but the size of the requirements is so vast that we still have thousands of individuals and children who are really enduring hardship each evening," warned one representative.
Ongoing Concerns and Ceasefire Terms
The subsequent part of the ceasefire includes plans for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the removal of troops, and other conditions.
Aid bodies have underscored the necessity for "expanded and ongoing aid to respond to immediate and future requirements."
The conflict was sparked by an offensive in October 2023. Subsequent actions have caused a substantial number of fatalities in the region, according to medical data.
