The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
