An Story of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. My plan was to arrange accommodation upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was taking place and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
Hailing from Singapore, I thought perhaps I could just sleep at the terminal ā only to discover Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate all night. With no idea quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking near a gaming venue, believing I could pass those hours somewhere that was open all night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the next morning, however, being a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more people with such compassion.
Apparently, I appeared lost because a woman spotted me loitering in the city center and inquired whether I needed help. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she suggested I could crash on the ground of her dormitory at the Australian National University ā a perfect solution, considering that was where my interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: one filled rolls she had taken home her evening job. This gave me warm shower facilities and a protected spot and safe to spend the night.
In retrospect, I can appreciate what a big chance she took as a woman inviting a man she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. At that time I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I am astonished she took that chance ā but still deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not attending ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but Iāve never forgotten her amazing act of human compassion. My sincere desire is that life has rewarded her act of kindness many times over. The world needs more people with such compassion.
