Afghan Rulers Employed Discarded UK Equipment to Locate Local Nationals That Served Alongside Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told
An informant has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK abandoned sensitive equipment permitting the Taliban to locate local individuals that had served with international military.
Information Leak Puts Thousands in Danger
Person A, known as Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the security lapse were advised to relocate and change their mobile numbers to protect themselves from militant forces.
Members of Parliament are investigating the Conservative government's management of a serious disclosure of private information concerning approximately 19k individuals who had applied to move to Britain to escape the regime.
How the Leak Occurred
A spreadsheet including private information, comprising names, phone numbers and in some cases household data, was mistakenly released by a staff member stationed at British military command in early 2022.
The incident came to light only in August 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had requested to move to the UK were posted on social media.
Taliban Capabilities
It appears there is a false assumption that the Taliban are without comparable resources that western nations possess,” she told lawmakers.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. If they have your phone number, they can locate your precise location. That's precisely what specialized teams accomplished.”
During testimony about regarding if authorities had access to necessary encryption, the source declared: “They possess all resources.”
Aftermath of the Data Breach
Initial findings presented to the committee estimated that no fewer than forty-nine kin and colleagues of people concerned by the incident had been executed.
A superinjunction about the incident was put in force in August 2023 and prevented any information regarding the matter from media reporting until July 2025.
Protective Actions
Given injunction limitations, the source and the aid group she collaborated with informed affected households they were working with that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.
“We advised that they moved if they could and switched their phone numbers. That constituted the two main details that, if the Taliban had access to these details, would result in their location being found,” the source testified.
Challenged Assessments
The whistleblower disputed that an official review performed by a retired civil servant had been wrong to conclude that the acquisition of the dataset by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.
“The crucial point is that affected people are in hiding from the authorities; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to past work history.”
She detailed horrific violence endured by at-risk Afghans, involving electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“We have had young kids who have had their arms broken to force the family to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
